Project Yellow Room

Neha is a Sarthak Yellow Rooms student. She lives in a slum and comes from extreme poverty. At age 10 she was a school dropout and her parents were trying to get her married.

Neha joined Sarthak Yellow Rooms at the age of 10.

Today at age 20, Neha is a confident young woman who is pursuing her undergraduate from Lucknow University, interning with Sarthak and is not married.

Yellow Rooms are brightly painted rooms permanently set up in the heart of a slum community, running programs and classes for six hours everyday. Yellow Rooms are completely free of cost to the community and are happy safe spaces for all the children living in that slum.

While working with children from very marginalised backgrounds we realised that any touch-and-go intervention will have a very limited, if any, impact on the lives of children whose issues go much beyond ‘education’ and include substance abuse, hygiene and health issues, sexual and physical abuse and emotional and mental health issues. This is why we imagined our Yellow Rooms as not just centres where a child could go to get a free class but as permanent safe spaces right in the middle of their communities. The project that we have developed over a period of time is based on a deep understanding of the needs and issues of the community.

The Yellow Room objectives are:

Changes that have been witnessed via Yellow Room are

  1. Impact 1
  2. Impact 2
  3. Impact 3
  4. Reduction in social malpractices such as early marriages and pregnancies, child labour, substance abuse
  5. Awareness of parents and their involvement in education for both boys and girls
  6. Improved relationship between parent and children.
  7. Better hygiene and health standards in the community especially for girl
